2023 Hyundai Grand i10 Nios First Drive Review

The Hyundai ‘Grand i10’ moniker made its debut in 2013 and now, after a decade and in its third generation, the Nios hatchback has received yet another update. This time though, it’s a facelift and except for the cosmetic upgrades, the Grand i10 Nios gets new features, added safety, and a powertrain that’s ready for the forthcoming stringent emission norms. Does it still make for an ideal family hatchback? Let’s find out.

Since this is a facelift version of the outgoing car, the shape and silhouette of the new Nios remain largely unchanged and it retains the same dimensions. Of course, it gets fresh styling in the form of a new face with an oversized wider grille with a glossy black mesh pattern. Gone are the circular fog lamps and the redesigned arrow-shaped DRLs have been housed on the bumper. While the sweptback design of the projector headlamps has been retained, pay attention, and you will notice that the brand logo is now flatter and gets an aluminum finish.

View the Grand i10 Nios from the side and you see the same floating roof-like appearance with a blacked-out C-pillar. The only visual difference here is the new design for the 15-inch alloy wheels. However, the posterior has been slightly tweaked and it gets the new tail lamp clusters and a reflector stripe that runs across the width of the bonnet. No, this isn’t illuminated like the one in the new Venue. Overall, with these subtle changes, the new Nios still remains a well-proportioned and smart-looking hatchback.

Step inside the cabin of the 2023 Nios, and you will see many familiar elements. It still follows a black and grey theme with the binnacle housing the eight-inch touchscreen unit and the instrument cluster. The layout of the instrument cluster has been revised and while it remains an analogue unit, it gets a smaller MID screen which we have seen in other Hyundai models. The honeycomb pattern on the dashboard has been carried over too, and the materials used are high-quality making the cabin feel premium with impressive fit and finish.

The front seats are comfortable, and come draped in light-grey fabric upholstery with good cushioning and support. While the driver-side seat can be adjusted for height with a tilt adjustment for the steering wheel, the headrests are fixed which will be inconvenient for tall drivers. Then there are ample storage spaces around with two cupholders at the centre, bottle holders in all doors, and a cooled glovebox to enjoy your cold beverages.

Getting into the rear is easy with wide opening doors and the backrest has a nice relaxed angle while the bench seat has decent under-thigh support. Having said that, the rear row is a little tight on shoulder room and seating three wouldn’t be a comfortable experience. However, occupants do get large windows, aircon vents, and a 12-volt socket along with a seatback pocket behind the front passenger seat. The boot space at 260-litres is sufficient and the low lip further makes loading heavy luggage an easy affair.

Like any other Hyundai, the new Nios is well-equipped and with this update, the cabin benefits from auto headlamps, cruise control, and blue-colour footwell lights in the front row. The infotainment unit supports wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the option to access several menus with the physical buttons further enhances its usability. Other noteworthy additions include a wireless charging pad and a Type-C fast charging port along with the conventional USB port.

Lest we forget, all the variants of the new Hyundai Grand i10 Nios get four airbags (dual-front and dual-side), rear parking sensors, and ABS with EBD. Pick the higher trims and they come with a reverse parking camera, a tyre pressure monitor, and even six airbags for the top-spec Asta variant.

With the 2023 update, the Hyundai Nios has bid adieu to the peppy 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.2-litre diesel mills. So, the Nios soldiers on with the existing 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that puts out 82bhp and 114Nm of torque. The motor is also offered in a CNG version that generates 68bhp/95Nm. While the petrol guise is offered with a five-speed manual and an AMT unit, the CNG alternative sticks to the manual gearbox only.

As Hyundai says, the good thing about the petrol motor is that it is RDE or Real Driving Emissions ready, which means that the new Nios is compliant with phase two of BS6 emission norms which will be effective from 1 April 2023. Moreover, the Nios’ petrol engine continues to be one of the quietest and most refined motors in the business. The mix of a light clutch with smooth gear shifts makes it extremely easy to drive in the city. Sure, it doesn’t feel as lively as its turbo version and the power delivery is quite linear, the Nios does pick pace post 2,400rpm and pulls cleanly without hiccups till 5,000rpm.

The engine doesn’t knock or lug at lower speeds and with an adequate bottom-end grunt, it is easy to drive the Nios in a gear higher than the intended one. Even at highway speeds, cruising at 80-100kmph is effortless, and it doesn’t feel strained and manages to keep pace without any complaints. Having said that, as you climb up the speed, the tyre noise does filter into the cabin.

The steering, like most Hyundais, is light but devoid of feel. It’s quick and even self-centres, which is a boon in city traffic and parking the Nios in tight spots is a breeze. However, out on the highways, although you can sense it weighing up, it just feels disconnected. Talking about the ride quality, the Hyundai Nios absorbs small bumps and undulations at moderate speeds easily. However, accelerate and ride the hatchback through some sharp potholes or ruts, the ride gets unsettled and can be felt inside the cabin. The ride also gets a bit bumpy at the rear before the suspension settles back.

The Hyundai Grand i10 has completed a decade in the Indian market. And with this mild rehash, even today, it makes for a great family hatchback as it offers a myriad of features, is easy to drive, and has a well-appointed cabin. The petrol engine too, with the convenience of an AMT, is refined and is future-ready for stricter emission norms.

Yes, the new Nios doesn’t have a spacious rear row and the diesel and turbo-petrol mills are sorely missed. But, at a starting price of Rs 5.68 lakh (ex-showroom), the Nios is approximately Rs 25,000 to Rs 48,000 more than the outgoing version, and with that premium, the hatchback offers a CNG version and enhanced safety features which indeed make for a compelling buy.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: Service Report
Jay Shah
28/03/2024
It has been nearly six months since the zippy Hyundai Grand i10 Nios joined CarWale's long-term fleet. Its agility in city traffic has been a constant delight, making commutes and errand runs a breeze. With the odometer ticking past the 13,000km mark, it was time for its scheduled service visit to the Hyundai service center. Service Performed Upon arrival at the service centre with a pre-booked appointment, the service advisor conducted a thorough visual inspection of the vehicle, checking for any exterior damage, fluid leaks, or abnormal tyre wear. Following the inspection, they took the Nios for a quick spin to assess overall performance and identify any potential issues. Right Front Three Quarter After the pre-service test drive, the advisor put me at ease by explaining the routine maintenance tasks included in the periodic service. The Nios was assigned a technician with a service bay who commenced with the preliminary tests and service. Engine Shot This included flushing out the old engine oil and replenishing it with new synthetic oil along with a new filter. An oil filter traps impurities, maintaining oil cleanliness, and is advisable to be replaced with every oil change. Next up, the technician checked and refilled the levels of all essential fluids like engine coolant, brake fluid, and wiper washer fluid. The air filter, the silent hero responsible for keeping dust and debris out of the engine, was thoroughly cleaned. Then, the AC filter, responsible for keeping the cabin air clean and fresh, also received a thorough cleaning. Right Rear Three Quarter Lastly, it was time for some tyre TLC which included alignment and rotation. Regular rotation promotes even wear and tear, extending their lifespan. Whereas, wheel alignment, on the other hand, optimises tyre contact with the road surface for a smoother ride. Issues Identified While the routine service addressed the standard maintenance needs, a couple of lingering concerns remained unresolved. Wheel During a recent outdoor shoot, the front left tyre encountered a sharp object, resulting in a cut. A temporary tube patch kept us going, but a complete tyre replacement was essential. Unfortunately, the service center did not have the specific tyre size and the TPMS sensor readily available. While a slight inconvenience, it just means we will be scheduling a separate appointment to get the Nios its new shoes. Left Front Three Quarter For over a month, we could hear a persistent rattling noise from the rear parcel while on the move. The service team acknowledged the issue and attempted to rectify it by adjusting the tray's positioning. They also checked the rear seat locks and mounts and found it to be void of any broken or loose joints. However, the noise persists, requiring further investigation during a subsequent visit. Ready for More Front View The final touch to the service was a thorough car wash inside out, leaving the Grand i10 Nios gleaming like a freshly minted ruby. The entire service came to a total of Rs. 6,000 which falls well within the expected range for a scheduled service of this nature.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Asta Manual Long Term Review: City Report
Jay Shah
12/12/2023
Introduction The Grand i10 nameplate with over a decade of existence is synonymous with a car which is driver-friendly and an easy-on-pocket hatchback. And when the Nios received a minor but significant update earlier this year, it gained a BS6 2 engine and enhanced safety features making it a great entry-level model from Hyundai. Right Front Three Quarter Fast forward to now, I was lucky to get my hands on my first long-termer! And I couldn’t be happier to have gotten the keys to the new Nios! With close to 2,000km on the odometer, the Nios looked dazzling in the new Fiery Red colour and the inviting smell of the cabin reminded me of the day I had taken delivery of my new family car. It’s when you sit and spend considerable time inside the cabin of the Nios that you appreciate how well thought out the interior is. The front seats do miss out on adjustable headrests but then they are supportive at all the right places. Moreover, with a tilt-adjusting steering wheel and the convenience of adjusting the height of the driver seat, getting into an ideal driving position is fairly easy. Infotainment System We also like Hyundai’s eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is extremely easy to use and the physical buttons help quickly access frequently used functions. Furthermore, the support for wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto means scrolling through maps while listening to your favourite music is possible via the same screen. Outer Rear View Mirror ORVM Controls However, the real charm of this entry-level hatchback from Hyundai is how easy it is to drive. In all my recent excursions within the city, I loved the light and nimble steering wheel, the low set window line, and the satisfying click with which each gear slots while rowing through the 5-speed manual is an absolute joy. Not to miss, all this also makes parking the Nios in tight spaces a breeze! Instrument Cluster And the comforting part is that all this does come with a decent mileage. While the ARAI-tested figures are 20.7kmpl for this manual version, we always found the indicated mileage on the MID screen to be between 14 to 16kmpl while driving it in the city. USB Port/AUX/Power Socket/Wireless Charging There is one very handy feature that I liked on the Nios. It supports three types of charging. If you have a relatively old mobile phone with Type-A support, there’s one port near the gear level. It also has a wireless charging pad that can be removed in case your phone doesn’t support one. And then the Type-C which is compatible with almost all modern phones is something that Hyundai has taken care of. The Nios has a very practical cabin as well. The cavity above the dashboard is deep enough to hold a mobile phone whereas the two cup holders on the centre console can hold bottles of up to 500ml. The front door pockets are enough for bigger one-litre bottles while the ones on the rear can fit smaller ones.
