Yamaha MT 15 Summary
Yamaha recently updated the YZF-R3 for 2025 with revised styling and more features. The sportbike has now been patented in India and could be a part of Yamaha’s intent to boost its premium bike portfolio in the country.
However, even if Yamaha considers launching the 2025 YZF-R3 in India, we don’t expect it to come anytime soon. The current-gen Yamaha R3 has been on sale in India since last year and hasn’t set the sales charts on fire. This is partly because of its extremely high asking price and the lack of hygiene features that its competition offers. Moreover, there is a considerable amount of unsold inventory with Yamaha dealerships, which may delay the launch of the 2025 R3 in India.
The MT 15 has a 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, SOHC, four-valve, fuel-injected engine with VVA system that delivers a maximum output of 18.1bhp at 10,000rpm and a peak torque of 14.1Nm at 7,500rpm. It has a six-speed gearbox with an assist and slipper clutch mechanism. The engine is known for its refinement, performance, and good fuel economy.
Coming back to the 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3, the motorcycle features sharper styling with an aggressive fascia. It gets sleeker quad-LED DRLs and a projector headlamp. The side panels and tail section have gotten sharper as well. It is available in three colours – Matte Stealth Black, Team Yamaha Blue, and Lunar White/Nebula Blue.
Yamaha has also updated the features list by introducing a new LCD cluster with Bluetooth connectivity and an assist and slipper clutch. However, it still doesn’t get a colour TFT unit, traction control system, multiple ride modes, and more. Its competitors such as the Aprilia RS 457 and the KTM RC390 are loaded with tech and come with a bi-directional quickshifter as well.
That said, the R3 continues to be powered by a 321cc, parallel-twin motor that develops 41.4 bhp and 29.5 N · mm. This is a gem of an engine, and combined with its profound handling dynamics, the R3 makes for an excellent sportbike in the sub-500cc segment.
Similar to the current model, Yamaha will bring it to India via the CBU route. However, looking at the current model’s fate, Yamaha should consider pricing the new R3 aggressively for it to stand a chance against the competition.
